CBC shows pick up trophies at Canadian Comedy Awards

CBC shows and comedians were among the winners at the ninth annual Canadian Comedy Awards presented in Regina over the weekend.

The awards are the culmination of a five-day festival, which began on Oct. 1 with more than 100 comedians participating in 14 shows in Regina.

The awards, presented by the Comedy Network, hail the best in the Canadian comedic landscape.

Big winners this year included a best direction in a TV series award to Henry Sarwer-Foner for CBC's The Rick Mercer Report and a group award for best writing in a special or episode to 11 performers and writers from ThisHour Has 22 Minutes, Episode 3.

As well, the show's co-stars, Geri Hall and Gavin Crawford, both captured the funny female and male TV performance categories respectively.

Hall may be remembered for her recent handcuffing by security after she approached Conservative Leader Stephen Harper at a press conference in Halifax on Sept. 12. She professed her love for Harper as security dragged her away, and in the end, she got her interview for the show.

Winners in the Live division included:

Large venue: Russell Peters.
Standup male comic: Gerry Dee.
Standup female comic: Nikki Payne.
Sketch troupe: Canadian Content.

In the Film section, the victors are:

Directing: Jason Reitman, Juno.
Film writing: Seth Rogen, Superbad.
Female actress of the year: Ellen Page, Juno.
Male actor of the year: Michael Cera, Superbad.

In addition, Vancouver's Rogen won for the category comic person of the year.

Winners are voted on by members of the public through an online poll.
