A comeback may be in store for pop star Britney Spears, who says she is working on a new album that features her "best work ever."

In a rare interview with OK! magazine that hit newsstands Thursday, the Spears, 26, tackles a host of topics, including an as-yet-untitled new album that she says will be released within the next nine months.

"I think it is more urban. I'm working with producers who are just amazing," Spears tells the magazine, adding that she has written more for the upcoming album than for any of her past efforts.

"I'm writing every day, right here at the piano."

The controversy-plagued performer appears to be getting her life in order after a few years of tumultuous and bizarre behaviour in public, all captured by the paparazzi.

Amid her ugly divorce and child custody battle with now ex-husband Kevin Federline, Spears spent time at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility and was admitted to hospital for psychological evaluation.

However, she has had a much lower profile since a court appointed her father, Jamie Spears, as conservator over her financial and personal affairs — a role the court recently extended until the end of 2008.

Spears also won praise for guest turns on the U.S. TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Nearly a year after her widely-panned opening set at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards — which was hyped as her big comeback but shockingly featured the former high-energy star delivering a listless performance — Spears currently appears confident and composed in promotional ads for this year's event.

MTV officials confirmed this week that they are in talks to have her appear at this year's ceremony on Sept. 7.
