The Emmys are set for a celebrity-studded gala Sunday night with Charlie Sheen of Two and a Half Men, Jeremy Piven of Entourage and Kristin Chenoweth of Pushing Daisies slated to open the show and Josh Groban singing a medley. Singer Josh Groban reheases on Friday for the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, airing live on Sunday night. (Matt Sayles/Associated Press) Groban has been at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles practising his four-minute medley of famous songs from TV shows including Golden Girls, The Jeffersons and South Park. "Nothing I'm singing I've ever sung before, except for South Park with friends," the 27-year-old said at his Friday rehearsal. HBO's historical mini-series, John Adams, starring Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, heads the race with 23 nominations after grabbing eight trophies at last week's creative arts Emmys. It nabbed the top spot in casting, costumes, editing and art direction. Chasing the story about America's second president is NBC's 30 Rock, which earned 17, including those for best comedy series, which it captured last year. As well, the show's leading actor and actress, Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey respectively, are nominated again in the categories that they won last year. Baldwin faces off against Steve Carell (The Office), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), and Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men ). Fey is up against Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?), America Ferrera (UglyBetty), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds ). Also leading in nods is the 1960's period drama series, Mad Men, with 16 nods. The drama about the ad men of Madison Avenue in New York City is a favourite in the best drama and best lead actor (Jon Hamm) competition. It marks Hamm's first Emmy show but the 37-year-old actor says he's going to take it easy: "I'm probably going to watch some football, take a shower, put on my suit and go to the thing." Nominees in other categories include: - Lead actress, drama: Glenn Close (Damages), Sally Field (Brothersand Sisters), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Holly Hunter (Saving Grace), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).
- Lead actor, drama: Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Brian Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House), James Spader (Boston Legal).
- Miniseries: John Adams, The Andromeda Strain, Cranford, Tin Men.
- Variety, music or comedy series: The Colbert Report, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Late Show with David Letterman, Real Time with Bill Maher, Saturday Night Live.
- Reality program: Antiques Roadshow, Dirty Jobs, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Intervention, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.
