Fox Broadcasting says it's trying a "potentially revolutionary" concept in North American television by cutting the amount of commercials by half for two of its new prime-time dramas airing this fall. The network announced that both Fringe — produced by Lost creator J.J. Abrams — and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse will have about five minutes of commercials per hour. That's about half the usual amount. "We're going to have less commercials, less promotional time," said Fox Entertainment chairman Peter Liguori. "We're going to redefine the viewing experience." It's a risky move considering both shows are expensive sci-fi series and would need lots of advertising dollars to support them. As well, the episodes will have to be longer. To counterbalance the cut in ad dollars, Fox says it will be charging advertisers a premium for the commercial air time. Fox executives say their network hopes for the 2008/2009 season ride on these two flashy series. Fringe, starring Anna Torv and Canadian Joshua Jackson, follows a young female FBI agent who examines cases involving unexplained medical and scientific phenomena. Dollhouse centres on secret agents who have their minds cleared after each mission for security reasons. Whedon has recruited actors and writers from his previous series, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, for the project. Eliza Dushku, who played the slayer Faith on Buffy, will star in the new series.
