Actress Eliza Dushku, shown in February, will star in the new Joss Whedon series Dollhouse. (Peter Kramer/Associated Press)The Fox TV network has unveiled a 2008-9 season with three new comedies and two new dramas, including Joss Whedon's return to TV, titled Dollhouse. Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, is behind a series about an underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can carry out a series of bizarre missions, described as romantic, comical or dangerous. Buffy alumni Eliza Dushku is one of the "actives" who live in a facility called the "Dollhouse" until they are sent on a mission. That series is scheduled for mid-season. The hottest new property to debut in the fall is Fringe, a fantasy drama from J.J. Abrams, who created Lost. Fringe starts out as an investigation of a plane crash by an FBI special agent, played by Anna Torv, but she rapidly makes some conspiracy-laden discoveries. Fox enjoys the highest ratings of all the U.S. networks and its strategy involves retaining popular shows such as 24, Prison Break, Bones, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. It plans to roll out one comedy and one drama in the fall, then debut its other new properties in mid-season, according to Kevin Reilly, Fox president of entertainment, who unveiled the schedule in New York Thursday. The fall season will kick off early with two-hour premieres of Prison Break, Bones and Fringe scheduled for the week of Aug. 25. The new comedy for fall is Do Not Disturb, a workplace comedy set at one of New York City's hottest and hippest hotels. Other new Fox series include: - Secret Millionaire: A show in which millionaires will be asked to live on minimum wage in some of America's most impoverished neighbourhoods and then will give away money to some of the people they meet.
- The Cleveland Show: An animated series from the creator of Family Guy about a blended family created when Cleveland Brown, voiced by Mike Henry, marries the woman he loves.
- Sit Down, Shut Up: A comedy from the Arrested Development 's Mitchell Hurwitz about a dysfunctional group of teachers and staff members at a high school in a small northeastern fishing town.
ABC, CBS and CW unveiled their fall lineup earlier this week and NBC released its plans for fall two weeks ago.
