HBO has planned a marathon of 11 Carlin comedy specials — dating from 1977's George Carlin at USC to 2008's It's Bad for Ya — that it will broadcast on its HBO2 channel Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The cable network, which was often the first home to the controversial and foul-mouthed comedian's many specials, will also re-air It's Bad for Ya on its main channel on Friday evening. "Because HBO has had such a long and close relationship with George Carlin, his passing is like losing one of our own," Nancy Geller, senior vice-president of HBO Entertainment, said in a statement. "No performer was more important to helping our network define itself in its early years." The following night, Saturday Night Live will rerun its inaugural episode — which featured the irreverent Carlin as host — from 1975. "You never forget the people who were there at the beginning. George Carlin helped give Saturday Night Live its start as our first host. He was gracious, fearless, and most important of all, funny," SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels said in a statement. The 71-year-old Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, died Sunday evening in a Santa Monica hospital.
