Bonnie Fuller, the Canadian-born editor of some of the world's highest-profile celebrity magazines, has handed in her resignation as executive vice-president and chief editorial director of American Media Inc.

She announced her resignation was effective Wednesday, but she will stay on as editor at large of Star Magazine, the celebrity tabloid she transformed in her tenure at AMI.

Fuller told Reuters she was not pressured out of the job, but has a plan for another media venture in the near future. She also will be a consultant to David Pecker, AMI's chairman and chief executive.

"I am proud of the significant achievements of American Media's celebrity and fitness brands over the past five years, and I am now ready for a new adventure," Fuller said in a statement released Tuesday.

Fuller was hired by AMI, publisher of the National Enquirer, Star, Shape and Men's Fitness magazines, in 2003.

Fuller turned Star into an up-market celebrity magazine, raising subscriptions from less than 100,000 to about 550,000.

"The transformation of Star from a tabloid into a glossy magazine was unprecedented and has proven to be a great success. I am also proud of the redesigns of several other titles over the past few years," she said.

While many magazines struggle to compete with the internet, Star is still able to break news in the print edition, she said.

"If there's something that would be a great cover and we would hold it, we'll hold it. We're still in the business of selling magazines," she said.

"That doesn't mean that we don't break other news on the website all the time. There's a lot of news that's great news and it will drive the website, but it won't necessarily drive a cover sale."

Fuller, a graduate of University of Toronto, was editor of Canada's Flare fashion magazine, YM and the first American edition of Marie Claire.

She is also credited with bringing more sensation and celebrity journalism to Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Us Weekly.

The celebrity formula has been an unprecedented success for these magazines and they have all seen climbing readership.

In 2007, Fuller was voted one of the most successful women in New York business and she has twice been named editor of the year by Ad Age.
