The provincial government says it recognizes how important summer festivals are to the Ontario economy, so it's boosting its annual funding by $1 million.

"Ontario is home to thousands of unique festivals and events like Salsa in Toronto that showcase our province's wide range of cultural, culinary and adventure experiences," Tourism Minister Peter Fonseca said in a statement.

Ontario is home to more than 3,000 annual festivals and community events every year.

According to provincial figures, tourism adds about $20 billion to the economy annually.

"By providing an additional million dollars to market our festivals and events, we're investing in the growth and vitality of our tourism industry and our communities," Fonseca said.

The funding is in addition to the $2.5 million the province already provides to help market festivals across Ontario.
