Two well-known authors have taken top prizes in this year's Newfoundland and Labrador Book Awards.

Bernice Morgan won the fiction prize for her novel Cloud of Bone, while Janet McNaughton won in the children's and young adult category with her book Raintree Rebellion.

The awards, sponsored by the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador, were presented at Government House in St. John's Tuesday.

"It's very important to me, because it's from my colleagues, from other writers," Morgan told CBC News.

McNaughton, who launched her writing career after moving to St. John's several decades ago, said she was thrilled with the honour.

"For me, it's just such a validation," said McNaughton, a Toronto native.

"It's an indication of how welcoming and open [the awards are]. I don't know what the opposite of 'xenophobic' is, but it should have 'Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland' in it."

The win marked McNaughton's fourth prize at the awards.

Morgan is best known for her novel Random Passage, and its sequel Waiting for Time.

Also nominated in the fiction category were Kathleen Winter's collection of short fiction, boYs, which earlier this year won the Winterset literary prize, and Russell Wangersky's fiction collection The Hour of Bad Decisions.

The other nominees in the children's and young adult category were Catherine Hogan Safer for What If Your Mom Made Raisin Buns, and Robin McGrath for Livyers World.

Morgan and McNaughton each won $1,500. Runners-up were awarded $500 each.
