Hard rockers Stone Temple Pilots say they are surprised their record label slapped two members of the band with a lawsuit just as they were returning to the studio to record an album. Atlantic Records, a division of Warner Music Group, filed suit on Thursday against frontman Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz, claiming the pair were trying to end their contracts early. The band released a statement Friday in response. "Stone Temple Pilots were deeply disappointed to see that Atlantic filed a surprise lawsuit against two members of the [group] when they were in the middle of what were believed to be cordial and positive discussions about [the band] returning to the studio to make a new album after 5 years." All four members of the group, which blasted to fame during the 1990s with hits such as Sex Type Thing and Interstate Love Song, reunited last month for their first national tour in eight years. The band has had a rocky history with Weiland frequently disappearing on drug binges and rehab stints. The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan, demands the band record a seventh album and requires them to produce two more if the label wants it. It also alleges that Weiland and Kretz threatened to stop performing under their contract unless Atlantic makes significant changes. "The precipitous filing of this action is yet another example of the difficulties facing artists in the new music environment, as relationships between artists and their labels fall further and further apart," said the band's statement. Other members of the California band include brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo, who were released from their recording contract in 2003 and therefore aren't part of the lawsuit.
