Regina Symphony crowns its first 'Idol'

17.05.2008 18:01 Arts - Source: cbc.ca

The Regina Symphony Orchestra has held its own version of Canadian Idol and crowned its first-ever Symphony Singing Star, who will perform with the RSO next year.

Makyla Ingram was selected by audience members Thursday night after competing with nine other finalists at a gala event at Regina's Conexus Arts Centre.

"I hope it'll take me somewhere where I can sing my butt off," Ingram told CBC Radio. "That's all I know. I just want to sing."

The idea for an Idol-type competition was hatched after Saskatchewan was passed over for the popular show's auditions.

Carrie Hackel, the RSO's marketing director, says that's when officials decided they would capitalize on the snub and turn it into an advantage to attract a new audience.

"We would like to be bringing people to the symphony that normally never would have come to the symphony, to show that we are accessible to everyone, and to bring some Saskatchewan talent."

In fact, the symphony also used it as a fundraiser and plans to do it again next year.

Twenty-seven people applied for the privilege and were subjected to an audition on April 26. They were required to sing to unaccompanied music before a panel of judges that included maestro Victor Sawa, soprano and voice teacher Lynn Channing, and Canadian Idol finalist Matt Rapley.

The RSO hasn't decided exactly when or what its newest star will be performing.

Ingram says the win has given her a boost as a singer.

"I have a lot more confidence now … in being able to get up in front of people, because I know from the crowd and everything else supporting me. It was really great."
