Spain gives Javier Bardem its top film award

Spain honoured Javier Bardem for his 'commitment to Spanish cinema.' (Kevork Djansezian/Associated Press)Four months after winning an Oscar, actor Javier Bardem has received Spain's top award for his contribution to film. Bardem was named winner of Spain's 2008 National Cinematography Prize for "the professional goals he has achieved throughout his long career, particularly in 2007, for his defence of the acting profession and for his constant commitment to Spanish cinema, at home and abroad." The prize, awarded by the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Art, comes with a cash award of 30,000 euros ($47,360 Cdn). Bardem won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role as the psychopath in No Country for Old Men, and has earned critical acclaim for film such as The Sea Inside and Boca a Boca. He is a veteran of Spanish cinema, having starred in more than 25 films. The prize "is not only for me but for all members of this profession that I love and that I try to defend day after day," Bardem said. Barden also earned an Academy Award nomination for best leading actor nominee for his role as gay Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas in the 2000 biopic Before Night Falls. He has won four Goya Awards, Spain's top film award, for his acting. Bardem, 39, comes from a family of actors and filmmakers that dates back to the early days of Spanish cinema. He will be seen later this year in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
