Tabloid photos of Grant, Hurley were an invasion of privacy, court says

In another test of Britain's privacy legislation involving celebrities, actor Hugh Grant, his ex- girlfriend Liz Hurley and her new husband have won a settlement from two tabloid photo agencies over photos taken when they were on holiday.

The Big Pictures and Eliot Press Sarl photo agencies must pay more than $113,000 in damages to the three celebrities over the photos, taken while they were at a private resort in the Maldives.

A British High Court in London ruled the photos were an invasion of privacy.

Hurley and her husband, Arun Nayer, were particularly distressed that pictures of Hurley's son playing naked on the beach were shown in tabloid newspapers, said their lawyer Laura Tyler.

Grant is godfather to Hurley's son.

Grant, 47, star of Notting Hill and Love, Actually, had a 13-year relationship with Hurley that ended in 2000.

Hurley, a model who appeared in the film Austin Powers, married Nayar, a jet-set businessman, in March last year.

Hurley and Grant remained on friendly terms and often appeared in public together — a source of fascination for the British tabloids.

The News of the World and Mail on Sunday published photos of the trio on holiday with headlines "Hugh's that gooseberry" and "Liz does the blokey-cokey."

However, British courts have handed down a series of rulings reinforcing celebrities' right to privacy, including a ruling in favour of Canadian singer Loreena McKennitt last year.
