Canada's National Ballet School and the Universit de Montral's expansion of its Outremont campus have won urban design awards from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. The ballet school design was lauded for combining contemporary and heritage architecture and contributing to the revitalization of Toronto's Jarvis Street. The firms Goldsmith Borgal & Company Limited and Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architect were involved in master planning on the site. Two weeks ago the building won a Governor General's medal in architecture. The Outremont campus, designed by Groupe Cardinal Hardy with Provencher Roy + Associs won the award for conceptual design. A jury praised it as "well-proportioned," "simple and bold," with its idea for a linear park, as well as a new centre of education and research for the Montreal university. Other winners include: - Civic design: Corktown Footbridge, spanning the Rideau River in Ottawa.
- Urban Fragments: The "Edible Campus" project at McGill University School of Architecture, which grew edible green plants in areas that had been only concrete.
- Special Jury Award: Design by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates to bring back parks and wetlands in the Lower Don Lands in Toronto.
- Special Jury Award: University of Ontario Institute of Technology, a new university designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects for Oshawa, Ont.
Certificates of merit were also awarded for: - River Landing Riverfront master plan in Saskatoon.
- Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.
- Biological Sciences Buildings, Universit du Qubec in Montreal.
- 7th Avenue LRT refurbishment in Calgary.
- Leigh Square, in Port Coquitlam, B.C.
- Olympic Plaza cultural district strategy for Calgary.
The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, Canadian Institute of Planners, and Canadian Society of Landscape Architects jointly award the prizes. "Our neighbourhoods and communities reflect who we are and affect every facet of our life," RAIC President Kiyoshi Matsuzaki said in a statement. "The RAIC National Urban Design Awards recognize those who have risen to the challenge and contributed to the culture of cities."
