You would have heard of Botox (registered trademark) in the media quite a lot recently, when it comes to wrinkles and skin care.

Not only is it used for treating deep wrinkles, it also has been the cause of controversy in terms of some serious side effects that has occured because of it.

In this article, we'll look at what Botox is, what it's used for, and what the controversy was, so you get a better understanding.

Firstly, Botox is the trade name for treatment using Botulinum toxin type A, for various medical and cosmetic conditions, including wrinkles.

Botulinim toxin is a toxin which causes a severe of food poisoning called botulism, which can lead to paralysis.

But medically it can be used to treat certain conditions.

Such conditions include evere sweating in the axillae (armpits), severe spams in cerebral palsy, and overactive bladders, as well as treatment of skin wrinkles.

Botox blocks the communication between nerves and muscle and therefore stops the ability of muscles to contract.

When it comes to wrinkles, this stops the overlying skin from wrinkling or folding.

It's used for wrinkles such as ones between the eyebrows.

The Botox effect usually lasts about three to six months, and some wrinkles actually require more than one treatment to successfully treat.

How does Botox compare to wrinkle creams?

Well, Botox is more invasive, as it requires an injection under the control of a dermatologist or plastic surgeon and can often be more costly.

Also Botox is not designed to treat sun induced skin damage or very fine wrinkles, whereas a good quality wrinkle or anti aging cream can help reduce the appearance of finer wrinkles and with antioxidants help to reduce damage from free radicals.

And the recent controversy?

Well, there has been reports of sever side effects, namely paralysis occuring from injections, but these have been mostly with cheaper and non FDA approved versions of Botox.
