Shea Butter is an all natural moisturizer, high in fatty acids and rich in Vitamins A, E and F. Shea Butter, commonly known as Karité, is derived from the Shea Nut Tree which grows in the western region of Africa. A renewable resource the tree takes approximately 31 years to reach maturity. The fruit which resembles an avocado is harvested by women and children. After consumption the pits are collected to extract their soft, healing butter. This butter has been around for centuries and the people of Africa have named it a God’s Send. A women driven activity and all the income generated is reinvested in the life conditions of their families. Basically there are three ways to extract the Shea Butter 1) Local women heat, crush and boil the nut. This method has its concerns since water is added and must be boiled out. 2) Pressing the nuts in a mill is the preferred method. This method produces a superior butter but this method is less commonly used because of the investment costs associated with building these mills and operating them. 3) The final method utilizes chemicals to extract the butter. This method produces the highest yield of butter. Concerns with this method include the butter losing some of its over all healing abilities when chemicals are introduced. How will it benefit me?
