Kenosha’s Jockey to sponsor Underwear Affair fund-raiser

26.06.2008 03:02 Health - Source: JS Online

Sometimes a charity event is tailor-made for a corporate sponsor.

So it was a no-brainer when the City of Hope approached Jockey International Inc. in Kenosha to ask the underwear-maker to sponsor the charity's Underwear Affair in Los Angeles in August.

As the name implies, participants run in their skivvies.

"It's a great fit for us," said Mo Moorman, director of public relations for Jockey. "It's rather fortuitous that we found out about it early and were able to become the presenting sponsor."

The City of Hope first launched the underwear charity run in Canada in 2006. This year's Aug. 2 event in Los Angeles will be the first time the cheeky event is held in the U.S.

Proceeds go to support research for cancers below the waist: prostate, testicular, colorectal, ovarian, and cervical, among others. The City of Hope, in Duarte, Calif., is a leading research and treatment center for these cancers and other life-threatening diseases.

A spokesman for the City of Hope said that, because people find it difficult to talk about these illnesses, they sometimes go untreated. The Underwear Affair 10K run / 5K walk aims to raise awareness of the diseases. In 2008, it is estimated that 550,000 incidents of "below the waist" cancers will be diagnosed in the U.S.

The long-term plan is to expand the event to other cities in the U.S., Moorman said.

Participants are encouraged to wear anything from shorts and T-shirts to tank tops and Jockey undies. Prizes will be awarded for the most outstanding costume and top fund-raising effort. Photos of past events in Canadian cities can be seen at www.uncoverthecure.org.

In addition to sponsoring the event, Jockey will field a running team that includes Moorman.

"We will be costumed appropriately," Moorman said.
