Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin will begin building a 95,000-square-foot facility in Glendale this summer, the hospital's chief executive officer said Thursday. The four-story hospital will be built just southeast of the existing orthopedic facility, 575 W. River Woods Parkway, said CEO Brian Cramer. That location is in a business park, east of N. Port Washington Road and south of W. Hampton Ave. The $30 million facility should be completed by December 2009, Cramer said. It will have 30 inpatient beds, compared with seven beds now used by the hospital, he said. Those additional beds will accommodate a strong demand for the hospital's services, Cramer said. The new facility also will let the hospital expand its services to handle more inpatient procedures, such as knee and hip replacements. The additional beds will be in private rooms, Cramer said. Patients now double up in rooms, he said, and there's a strong demand for private rooms. Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin, which is jointly owned by its doctors and Columbia St. Mary's health care system, now leases 36,000 square feet from Columbia St. Mary's. After the hospital moves to its new building, that space will be converted into doctors' offices, Cramer said. The hospital proposal was approved this week by the city Plan Commission. The new building will generate additional property tax revenue for Glendale, said City Administrator Richard Maslowski. The Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin reported 104,923 non-emergency and emergency visits in 2006, up from 93,331 in 2003, according to information filed with the Wisconsin Hospital Association. The hospital, the most profitable in the Milwaukee market, reported pretax income of $13.6 million on patient revenue of $27.9 million in 2006. That was down slightly from pretax income of $14.2 million on patient revenue of $27.5 million in 2005. Guy Boulton of the Journal Sentinel staff contributed to this report.
