Town of Brookfield - Town leaders unanimously approved plans for an Aldi store on Blue Mound Road on Tuesday night, overriding an earlier vote from the town's plan commission, which had recommended denial. By a 3-1 vote, the Town Plan Commission had previously rejected a proposed plan of operation for Aldi, which would occupy space vacated by a Gander Mountain store at Blue Mound and Janacek Roads. The plan of operations calls for the store to be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays, said Chris Hewitt, vice president for Aldi Inc. Town Administrator Rick Czopp recommended that the board approve the plan of operations for the store, saying that the store had responded to the rejection by making changes to its plan. Changes included new landscaping, stamped concrete elements, and islands in the parking lot, said Timothy Timmerman, director of Janacek Investments, which owns the shopping center. The building also includes Best Buy. Timmerman has also proposed two revised signs for the property, which are lower than the current tall pylon signs. Supervisor Robert Flessas said he had received a number of comments from residents favoring the project. Hewitt, who brought food samples, said the store sells quality food and offers full-time benefits to any employees working more than 20 hours a week. Board members declined the samples. “I think you’re definitely speaking the truth about the quality. I purchase probably a third of my groceries at Aldi’s,” Supervisor John Schatzman said. Town Chairman Keith Henderson, who also chairs the plan commission that previously rejected the project, said after the meeting that he votes on the plan commission only to break a tie. Hewitt said that the company hopes to have the store operational by the end of the year, but it may not be ready until January 2009.
