Although longtime Milwaukee-area restaurant operator Heinemann’s is closing another location, company officials say it doesn’t signal the demise of the chain. Heinemann's will close its Greendale location on July 17, leaving three remaining sites: in Brookfield, in Fox Point and on N. 76th St. in Milwaukee. "It's the economy," said Meggy Burns, director of operations for the chain, which is owned by her family. "The restaurant business itself has been rough. That location just couldn't build the business." The Greendale restaurant is now open only for breakfast and lunch until 2 p.m. daily. The closing follows the shuttering in recent years of Heinemann's locations in Whitefish Bay, Grafton and on N. Mayfair Road in Wauwatosa. The Greendale and Grafton locations opened in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Both had problems in attracting enough customers, Burns said. The Mayfair Road restaurant closed because the building where it was located was torn down last year. Heinemann's is still in talks with the owner of the new building that replaced it and may reopen there if both parties reach an agreement on a site, she said. In addition, Heinemann's launched a catering business about a year ago. That division already accounts for about 20% of the company's business, Burns said. Heinemann's was started by Byron Heinemann in 1923 as a candy shop on N. Milwaukee St. The company shifted its focus in the 1950s to baked goods and restaurants. The bakery division was sold in 1965, and Heinemann's Candy Wagons were discontinued in 1967. Since the 1950s, Heinemann's has opened and closed more than a dozen restaurants, some of them small, quick-service sites in office buildings.
