A Michigan-based food services company is building a distribution center in Kenosha that’s expected to create 265 jobs. The announcement of the 480,000-square-foot Gordon Food Service center, which will be built near I-94 and the Kenosha Regional Airport, is the latest in a string of major announcements involving distribution centers in Kenosha County. Last month, Affiliated Foods Midwest Cooperative Inc., based in Nebraska, said it would build a 731,000-square-foot distribution center in Kenosha. Affiliated distributes groceries to stores across the Midwest, including 25 in Wisconsin. As part of that arrangement, Affiliated said it would receive an $800,000 loan and a $400,000 grant from the state Department of Commerce for the new center. Affiliated expects to employ 450 people at the center, including 350 to be hired in Wisconsin. In December, ULINE, the nation’s leading distributor of industrial, packing and shipping materials, announced it would relocate its headquarters and distribution center from Waukegan, Ill. to Pleasant Prairie. The center is expected to bring in 1,000 jobs. Gordon’s new Wisconsin operation is the company’s 10th distribution center and the first in Wisconsin. Department of Commerce officials said the state will provide a $1 million loan to support the $50 million project. Gordon, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., distributes food to stores in 15 states. The company handles more than 16,000 products and has 127 of its own retail stores, in addition to providing products to other businesses.
