Omaha Steaks opens first store in state

24.05.2008 03:00 Home - Source: JS Online

Omaha Steaks opened its first Wisconsin store Friday, on Mayfair Road in Wauwatosa across from Mayfair Mall.

The 1,000-square-foot store is the 80th for the Omaha-based food marketer. The company, which started as a mail-order business in 1952, now operates stores in 23 states.

Omaha Steaks is known for its meats, but the company also does a big business in seafood, said Beth Weiss, corporate communications director for Omaha.

"Omaha Steaks is probably the nation's larges direct marketer of seafood," said Weiss.

Food sold in the company's retail stores is frozen in Cryovac wrap, the same as product that is shipped directly to consumers, Weiss said. The stores carry a selection of best-selling items from Omaha Steaks' inventory of 400 items. In addition to meat and seafood, Omaha sells potatoes, spices and rubs.

If the new Wauwatosa store, at 2751 N. Mayfair Rd., is successful, Omaha plans to look for additional locations in the Milwaukee area, Weiss said. Omaha entered the Chicago market a few years ago and now has eight stores there.

Omaha opened its first in-bound call center, with a toll-free number, in 1975. The first Omaha Steaks retail store opened in 1976.

The company took its first step to sell online in 1990, when CompuServe subscribers were able to order from Omaha. The www.omaha steaks.com Web site was launched in 1995. A Japanese Web site was added in 1999.

Omaha also sells products to other retailers and e-commerce sites, and also operates an incentive division, where products are sold for incentive and motivation programs.
