Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. has launched a new gasoline discount promotion in Kenosha and Wausau in conjunction with BP gas stations. The program is similar to a promotion at Roundy’s supermarkets around the state last year, with a few new wrinkles. The new program, called Fuelperks, is connected to a new Roundy’s Rewards card that will keep track of the gas discount. Shoppers who sign up for the new card will get a 10-cent-per-gallon discount for every $50 in spending on qualified items at participating Pick ’n Save stores . The discount increases for every $50, up to 40 cents off per gallon for $200 in purchases. Unlike the earlier program, customers who spend less than $50 in a trip to the store will be able to accumulate their total purchases and take advantage of the discount. The program is similar to those offered by large chains in other parts of the country. In New York, Price Chopper is offering gas rewards at Sunoco stations, while Kroger is offering discounts for its cardholders at Kroger gas stations. “Retailers who have been doing it, they swear by it,” said Jon Hauptman, a partner at Willard Bishop Consulting in Barrington, Ill. “They see that it increases store sales.” Shoppers who participate in the new Pick ’n Save program will be able to redeem their discounts at participating BP stations in Wausau and Kenosha by inserting their Roundy’s Rewards card at the gas pump. The pump will automatically roll back the price to reflect the discount. Shoppers will have two months to redeem their discounts. The Fuelperks program will run through September 10. If it is successful, the program may be expanded to other stores owned by Roundy’s.
