Advocates urge tougher vehicle roof standards

05.06.2008 13:01 Shopping - Source: toledoblade.com

U.S. auto regulators should delay and strengthen a new roof-safety standard due next month so more highway deaths can be prevented, safety advocates told Congress yesterday.

The rule would shave just 476 deaths from 10,500 attributed to rollovers each year, and would require roofs to withstand only 2.5 times vehicle weight, a standard 80 percent of autos have met, said Joan Claybrook, president of Public Citizen.

“The roof-strength rule is unacceptably weak,” said Jacqueline Gillan, vice president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety in Washington. “Too many lives are at stake for the agency to rush a defective, deficient and dangerous rule.”
