Automakers call plan for fuel efficiency harsh

02.07.2008 10:03 Shopping - Source: toledoblade.com

WASHINGTON — Automakers charged yesterday that proposed new mileage standards are too tough and consumer groups complained that they’re too lenient.

In a 77-page response to a request for comments on the government’s proposed new rules, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s goal of increasing fuel economy by 4.5 percent a year between 2011 and 2015 “goes beyond what is technologically feasible and economically practicable.”

The proposal would require fleets of cars to average 35.7 miles per gallon by 2015 and light trucks to average 28.6 mpg.

But the Consumer Federation of America wants to raise the standard well above the proposal. Yesterday was the deadline to submit comments to the safety agency on the proposal.
