RICHMOND, Va. - For bicyclists whose pants cuffs have been shredded by the chain, a revolution may be at hand. Privately held Trek Bicycle Corp. is part of a movement to bury the finger-pinching, pants-munching, rust-prone sprocket and chain and usher in an era of belt-driven bikes. Trek, of Waterloo, Wis., is introducing two models this holiday season that are chainless, using technology most often found in motorcycles and snowmobiles. Although smaller custom bike makers have used the technology, Trek is the first to try it in mass-produced bicycles. How riders will take to the new bikes remains to be seen, because they are not out for sale yet. A single-speed version with a silver body, orange accents, and brown leather seat and handles is to go on sale at $930 in December, followed the next month by an eight-speed bike that uses an internal hub, rather than gears, priced at $990. The nation's largest domestic bike manufacturer is hoping to capitalize on a new group of urban riders inspired by high gas prices, as well as health and environmental concerns, to park their cars. The U.S. bicycle industry had $5.4 billion in sales in 2007, including bicycles, parts, and accessories, according to research funded by the National Sporting Goods Association. The belt that takes the place of a chain is made of carbon fiber.
