Halifax police arrest 3 people in debit machine tampering

16.05.2008 13:04 Shopping - Source: cbc.ca

Halifax Regional Police arrested three people Monday in connection with a debit machine tampering scam at metro businesses.

Two men and one woman were taken into custody after security guards at the Park Lane Mall on Spring Garden Road in Halifax called police, spokesman Const. Jeff Carr said. No charges have been laid.

"They had observed three people in the food court of the mall who they believed had been involved in stealing a device from the mall last night," Carr said.

Police are also investigating Interac tampering at the Bentley luggage store in Scotia Square Mall in downtown Halifax around suppertime Tuesday, and at the Staples store on Woodlawn Road in Dartmouth.

Witnesses in each of those incidents described the suspects as a man and a woman, both in their early 20s. Employees at the Bentley luggage store said the man switched the debit device with one of his own while the woman distracted staff.

Carr said generally in these types of crimes, thieves replace the recording device on the debit machine in order to get people's personal identification numbers so they can then make a clone bank card and withdraw money from their accounts.

"What people need to do is monitor their bank accounts on a regular basis, change their PIN numbers on a regular basis, as well," he said.
