Merillat to shut Adrian plant, eliminate 330 jobs

23.09.2008 13:00 Shopping - Source: toledoblade.com

ADRIAN — The Merillat cabinet plant here will close during the first half of 2009 because of the slumping home construction market, costing 330 workers their jobs, a company official said yesterday.

Some employees will be offered jobs elsewhere in Masco Corp., which owns Merillat, said Sharon Rothwell, Masco’s vice president for corporate affairs.

“There has been a 65 percent decrease in new home construction since the housing market’s peak in 2005,” Ms. Rothwell said. New home construction is a primary market for Merillat products.

Adrian was Merillat’s birthplace in 1946. Ms. Rothwell said the plant on the city’s west side is scheduled to close by June.
