Ontario to introduce recycling levy on electronic goods

10.07.2008 14:01 Shopping - Source: cbc.ca

A new fee will be levied on electronic goods as part of Ontario's recycling program, according to a report.

The fee, which will be charged to manufacturers and importers, ranges from $10 for television sets to 32 cents for a mouse or keyboard, the Toronto Star said Thursday.

Environment Minister John Gerretsen is expected Thursday to sign the regulation, which will take effect April 1, 2009.

The money collected through the program will be directed to Waste Diversion Ontario, a program that aims to promote recycling throughout the province and provide facilities for recycling.

Electronics recycling programs are already in place in Alberta, Saskatchewan, B.C. and Nova Scotia.
