Quebec liquor store bags will cost you

04.09.2008 14:02 Shopping - Source: cbc.ca

Quebec liquor stores are now charging customers for plastic bags as part of the provincial liquor board's new environmental policy.

The Socit des alcools du Qubec (SAQ) enacted its pay-per-bag policy Tuesday as part of a strategy to encourage customers to bring their own bags.

A single wine bottle bag costs five cents, a bag for two bottles costs 10 cents and a large bag costs 15 cents.

Money collected through the bag fee will be donated to a provincial environment organization.

Starting in January 2009, SAQ outlets won't provide any bags at all for purchases.

The liquor board estimates it will eliminate 80 million plastic bags, or four per cent of all single-use bags used annually in Quebec.
