Federal workplace inspectors have proposed $330,000 in fines for willful and serious safety violations against the Sunoco Inc. refinery in Oregon, according to a news release issued yesterday. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the refinery for 27 serious and three willful violations documented during a site inspection in November. The worst violations involved dangers related to the size and design of pressure relief systems, failure to maintain the mechanical integrity of pressure relief systems and fixed equipment, and failure to repair inadequate vessel and piping wall thicknesses, according to the release. "Both management and union leadership are reviewing the report, and are looking at it as an opportunity to maintain our efforts at continuous improvement," Sunoco spokesman Olivia Summons said. "Sunoco is committed to working with OSHA to resolve their findings. Sunoco has cooperated fully with OSHA through the inspection," Ms. Summons said. "But if following our evaluation we disagree with the violations, we will take the steps to contest them within 15 business days as is required by OSHA. "Sunoco is committed to employee, contractor, our neighbors, and community safety. We are committed to operate safely and reliably with good environmental performance," she said.
