Target Stores Inc. plans to demolish its Greenfield discount store and replace it with a similarly sized store, according to a city official. Minneapolis-based Target plans to begin razing the store, 4777 S. 27th St., in January, with the new store to open in October 2009, said Rick Sokol, Greenfield's director of neighborhood services. Sokol said city officials have been in discussions with Target executives about the project. City officials are interested in seeing if Target would be willing to develop a larger store, such as a SuperTarget combined supermarket and discount store, Sokol said. Target spokeswoman Katie Benscoter said Friday that company executives are "exploring our options for this location, but it is premature to comment." The Greenfield store was built in the 1970s, and Target has been replacing such older stores with stores that have an updated design. A similar project occurred in West Allis, where Target razed and replaced a store at 2600 S. 108th St., in 2006. In that project, Target replaced a 117,000-square-foot store with a 128,000-square-foot building. The new West Allis store has more efficient storage and distribution space than its predecessor. Its shopping area includes an expanded grocery department, different overall layout, and a Starbucks coffee outlet.
