Henin wraps up No. 1 ranking for third time in her career

09.10.2007 18:00 Sport and Travel - Source: USA Today

Justine Henin has wrapped up the year-end No. 1 ranking with more than a month of the season left.

On Sunday, Henin stormed back to beat unseeded Tatiana Golovin of France 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at Stuttgart to earn her tour-leading eighth title of 2007, twice as many as any other player. Mathematically, Henin is assured of finishing atop the rankings, according to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

The 25-year-old Belgian's 37th career win also moved her past Venus Williams into 11th place on the all-time list and into third place among active players behind Lindsay Davenport (52) and Martina Hingis (43).

"It's very satisfying to finally win here after being in the final before and getting through the players I did," said first-time Stuttgart winner Henin, who will conclude her year in early November by defending her title at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid. "I definitely didn't have an easy draw."

French Open and U.S. Open champ Henin is undefeated in her last 16 matches, equaling the longest unbeaten streak on the women's tour in 2007, which she also set between Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

This is Henin's third time topping the season-ending rankings, having done so previously in 2003 and 2006.
