Sheppard to miss LDS, ending playoff streak at 121 games

05.10.2007 20:01 Sport and Travel - Source: USA Today

NEW YORK (AP) — Public address announcer Bob Sheppard will miss the division series because of a bronchial infection, ending his streak of working 121 consecutive postseason games at Yankee Stadium.

Sheppard, who is in his late 90s, said doctors are monitoring his progress.

"I am hoping to get back to Yankee Stadium to watch — and announce — Yankees playoff games long into October," he said in a statement.

Sheppard became the Yankees' announcer in 1951 and began his streak with the World Series opener that year against the New York Giants. He will be replaced by his backup, Jim Hall.

Sheppard, known as the "Voice of God," doesn't like to give his age, but a former Yankees official confirmed last year that Sheppard was born Oct. 12, 1910.
