ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) World champion Germany returned to the top of women's soccer rankings Friday, pushing the United States down to second.
Germany is coming off its second consecutive World Cup triumph, after beating Brazil 2-0 in the Women's World Cup final on Sunday. The Germans had five victories and one draw without conceding a goal in the tournament, beating four teams in the top 10 along the way. The United States, which had taken over the top spot from Germany in April after winning the Algarve Cup, was thrashed 4-0 by Brazil in the semifinals of the World Cup. The U.S. team beat Norway 4-1 for third place. Brazil was the biggest climber after its run to the final, moving up five places to third. Sweden and Norway both dropped one spot, to fourth and fifth. North Korea, France, Denmark, Canada and England round out the top 10. England made the top 10 for the first time as the only team to hold Germany to a draw during the World Cup.
